American Express Membership Rewards transfer partners are a good way to turn points into high-value travel, but understanding how to use them effectively is key. This guide explains how the program works and how to maximize value when transferring points. There are 17 airlines and 3 hotel partners, with transfer ratios ranging from 1:0.8 to 1:2, making it essential to compare options before moving your rewards.

Quick Overview: Amex Membership Rewards Transfer Partners

The American Express Membership Rewards program lets you transfer points to 17 airline partners and 3 hotel partners, offering flexible ways to book travel. While the standard transfer ratio is 1:1, there are notable exceptions, including Cathay Pacific and Emirates Skywards at 5:4, JetBlue TrueBlue at 1:0.8, and Aeromexico Rewards at 1:1.6. Hilton Honors transfers at 1:2, though its points are typically lower in value.

Most partner transfers take up to 48 hours, usually require a minimum of 1,000 points (250 for JetBlue and 500 for Qantas), and are one-way and irreversible (Source: American Express).

These are the current transfer ratios for Amex’s airline partners:

How To Transfer Membership Rewards

With Membership Rewards points in your account, it’s time to decide where to transfer them so you can start traveling. Here are the simple steps to make the transfer process easy.

Step 1: Select the tab that says “Earn and Redeem” from the menu.

Step 2: Select where it says “Transfer Points” under “Redeem.”

Step 3: Choose your preferred airline or hotel transfer partner, then select where it says “Transfer Points.” If you haven’t already, you need to link your frequent flyer account to your Membership Rewards account. In the example below, we chose Delta Air Lines.

Step 4:
Once you have linked your airline or hotel account to your Membership Rewards account, choose how many points you would like to transfer. In most cases, transfers must be made in increments of 1,000 (Source: American Express).

By the thousands. Image Credit: American Express
Hot Tip:

Transfers to U.S. airline programs typically incur a fee of 0.06 cents per mile transferred, capped at $99 per transaction, so factor this into your redemption value when moving points.

Step 5: Confirm the number of points you are transferring and complete the transfer.

Keep in mind the cumulative transfer fee. Image Credit: American Express

Step 6: Head to the appropriate airline or hotel program to book your award flight or award stay.

Bottom Line:

Transferring Amex points to partners is easy. Just have your loyalty program numbers and your Amex card details handy.

Transfer Bonuses

Transfer bonuses can significantly boost the value of your points, typically offering 10% to 40% more miles when you transfer points to certain airline or hotel partners. For example, if you were to transfer 10,000 points when a particular partner is offering a 40% bonus offer, your points would be worth 14,000 points after transfer.

Historically, Amex has offered as many as 17 bonuses in a single year, but these promotions have become less frequent and less predictable in recent years. In fact, there have often been periods in 2026 so far with no active bonuses, making it increasingly important to consider transfers carefully when they do occur.

However, you shouldn’t transfer points just because there is a bonus. It’s best to keep your points in a transferable account (like Amex, Capital One, Chase, Citi, or Marriott Bonvoy) until you have a specific redemption in mind.

Earning Amex Membership Rewards

American Express offers plenty of ways to earn Membership Rewards points. Pick the card or combination of cards that will help you earn the most points and get the benefits that matter to you.

A fun and easy way to boost your earning potential is to maximize Amex Offers, which grant additional Membership Rewards or cash-back for your purchases at select merchants.

Booking Travel With AmexTravel.com

If you’re booking economy flights or hotels, don’t forget to check out AmexTravel.com, where you can book cash flights with points. Points are generally worth 1 cent each.

With The Business Platinum Card® from American Express, each point is worth about 1.54 cents when booking on your preselected airline.

The boost is applied as a 35% rebate, so you still need the total points in your account at the time of booking. You can get up to 1 million points rebated per calendar year.

For example, let’s look at a flight that would cost 27,340 Membership Rewards points, booked with the Amex Business Platinum card and Delta Air Lines as your preselected airline. Once the rebate applies, American Express would return 9,569 Membership Rewards points to your account, so the booking would cost only 17,771 points.

Amex Pay with Points JFK LAX
The points cost doesn’t reflect the rebate yet. Image Credit: American Express

Membership Rewards Insider Fares can make your bookings through AmexTravel.com even more valuable, as American Express sometimes discounts flights when you pay entirely with points.

Should You Transfer or Book Through Amex?

Consider the flights we discussed above. Booking this itinerary through AmexTravel.com costs 17,771 Membership Rewards points, and the booking still earns Delta SkyMiles as a paid fare rather than an award ticket.

If you were to transfer Membership Rewards to Delta and book the same itinerary as an award ticket, you would need to transfer about 19,000 points to your SkyMiles account. In this case, booking through the portal would be a better deal.

This is clearly a time to book through AmexTravel.com rather than transferring points. To ensure you get the most out of your points every time, it’s important to check both the portal and transfer options when booking economy class.

Other Ways To Use Your Points

AmexTravel.com also allows you to book hotels at up to 1 cent per point in value through Fine Hotels + Resorts.

You can also redeem your points for gift cards to merchants like Nike, Old Navy, or Macy’s, or use your points to shop for items from Amazon.

These redemptions typically offer lower value than travel redemptions.

Combining Membership Rewards From Different Accounts

If you have multiple cards that earn Membership Rewards, they can each be linked to the same account, so your points will automatically collect in a single place.

Generally, when you apply for a new card that earns Membership Rewards points, it is automatically linked to your account.

One downside is that points cannot be transferred to your spouse’s or significant other’s Membership Rewards account.

However, you can transfer points to a frequent flyer program owned by any authorized user on your account, as long as they have been an authorized user for at least 90 days (Source: American Express).

While this isn’t a perfect solution, it still allows you to help friends and family book award flights.

Redeeming Membership Rewards

Using your Membership Rewards points for travel is clearly the best way to redeem them.

With so many airline transfer partners and lots of ways to redeem your points, it’s almost overwhelming.

To make the process a bit easier, we’ve compiled a list of the best ways to redeem your Membership Rewards for amazing travel experiences.

Hot Tip:

Final Thoughts

American Express Membership Rewards transfer partners offer multiple redemption options, with points transferable to 17 airline programs and 3 hotel loyalty programs, giving cardholders a wide range of choices. However, the value you get depends heavily on the partner you choose, as transfer ratios and processing times vary significantly across programs.

It’s also important to remember that all transfers are one-way only, meaning that once points are converted, they cannot be reversed. As a result, thoughtful planning is essential to maximize value and avoid locking points into less optimal programs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you transfer your Membership Rewards points to another person?

You cannot transfer your Membership Rewards points to anyone else. However, you can transfer your Membership Rewards to someone’s frequent flyer account, provided they are an authorized user on one of your cards and have been so for at least 90 days.

Can you transfer points from an airline to Membership Rewards points?

You cannot transfer miles or points from an airline to Amex Membership Rewards points. You also cannot get back any Membership Rewards points that you have already transferred to an airline partner, as all transfers are final.

Do Membership Rewards points expire?

Your Membership Rewards points will not expire as long as your Amex card account remains open and in good standing with an active credit card.

How much are Membership Rewards points worth?

Generally, your Membership Rewards points are worth 0.6 cents toward cash-back, 0.8 to 1.10 cents when cashing them out to a Charles Schwab investment account (American Express Platinum Card® for Schwab), or 1 to 2 or more cents when redeemed through transfer partners.

Is it better to transfer Amex points or book through AmexTravel.com?

In most cases, transferring Membership Rewards points to airline or hotel partners is a better value than booking through AmexTravel.com, but it depends on how you redeem.

Which Amex transfer partner gives the best value for business class?

The best-value Membership Rewards transfer partners for business class depend on the region you’re flying, but a few airlines consistently stand out as delivering the highest redemption value. These include Air Canada, Air France, ANA, Qatar Airways, and Virgin Atlantic.
